Interesting and disturbing critique on the current beauty industry and society’s beauty standards. Filed under the horror genre, Natural Beauty tells a story about a piano prodigy, who, after a series of unfortunate events, resorts to working at a very reputable luxury beauty company, in a fictional world, that mirrors closely to our present reality. I am not one for horror (not that this is a spooky/monster horror) but this left me with a disturbed feeling once I closed the book. With social media pushing trends and standards within modern society, this hit close to home. Despite some vulgar and disturbing scenes, they were necessary to make an impact and Huang did a beautiful job in story telling. For the genre, I think I this was a great story. For my own personal tastes, I think it was a little too weird, too disturbing to enjoy. Just not my cup of tea. But to each their own.
